Hello Guys,

I was trying to make my laptop cooler, I'm just wondering if it is possible to extract a 10V supply out of the 2 USB ports connecting them in series or in some other configurations? I was planning to feed it to a CPU fan of 12V. I've been trying to look for a 5V CPU fan but with no luck. I was also planning to this to my PS2 since it has 2 USB ports.

Hope you guys can help. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

You might consider using a USB-powered laptop cooling device specifically designed for that purpose. See for example:

Modifying a laptop's circuitry to strap two regulated +5VDC circuits is no simple feat, and would most likely damage one or the other - it certainly would void any warranty. It is not the same as putting two 5V batteries in series to get 10V. Additionally, it is most likely the USB ports are powered by the same +5V rail.

Besides, running a +12 fan at 10V will cause it to run slow. It would make much more sense to get 5V fans.

I recommend a Laptop Cooling Pad w/ext. power supply. They are hard to find, which I find odd. Using an external power supply places no extra demand on laptop's already hot power and regulator circuits.

Hello,

Thanks for the info guys, but actually I meant to use it on my PS2 to add an additional cooling fan. I'm trying to find a 5V fan but I'm in no luck or I'm just too lazy to find, hahahaha. Thanks again guys. Really appreciate it.

Just one last thing, the twin USB cable that comes sometimes in a 2.5" HDD enclosure is used to get more current, not voltage, from the USB ports right? The twin USB cable is connected in parallel in relation to the USB ports.

No, I doubt it. Do you have link to such a product?

Since the ports on the PC are likely connected to the same USB controller, drawing more current than designed would be undesirable. If the attached device needs more power, it will come with an external power supply.
